Fireworks have been lighting up the night sky for centuries, bringing joy, excitement, and wonder to celebrations worldwide. Whether it’s New Year’s Eve, Diwali, Bonfire Night, or a summer wedding, fireworks add that magical spark to the occasion. If you’re new to fireworks and want to learn more before you buy fireworks online, this beginner’s guide will walk you through the main types of fireworks, their uses, and some safety tips.
At Big Shotter Fireworks, we’re passionate about helping people enjoy fireworks responsibly while choosing the right ones for their events.
1. Roman Candles – A Timeless Classic
One of the most popular and iconic fireworks is the roman candle. This type of firework ejects one or more coloured stars or effects into the sky in a steady, sequential manner.
Best for:
- Backyard displays
- Smaller celebrations
- Adding variety to larger shows
Why people love them:
Roman candles create rhythmic bursts of light, which can be coordinated with music for a more artistic display. They’re perfect for adding elegance without overwhelming noise, making them ideal for mixed-age audiences.
2. Rockets – The Crowd-Pleasers
Rockets are the show-stoppers of the firework world. They shoot high into the sky before exploding into spectacular patterns of light and colour.
Best for:
- Large open spaces
- Grand finales
- Public events
Why people love them:
Rockets produce some of the most dramatic and awe-inspiring effects, from shimmering golden willows to loud, crackling bursts.
3. Fountains – Dazzling Ground Effects
Fountains stay on the ground but produce beautiful sprays of sparks, often with crackles and whistles.
Best for:
- Driveways or gardens
- Family-friendly events
- Places where low noise is preferred
Why people love them:
They are low-risk, visually stunning, and can be enjoyed up close, making them a great choice for beginners.
4. Cakes & Barrages – Continuous Excitement
A cake or barrage is a cluster of fireworks connected together to fire in a sequence. Once lit, it produces a mini-show all by itself.
Best for:
- People who want variety without multiple lightings
- Coordinated display sequences
- Larger parties
Why people love them:
They combine different effects—bursts, crackles, comets—into one convenient package.
5. Sparklers – Small but Magical
While not as loud or dramatic as aerial fireworks, sparklers remain a favourite, especially for children and weddings.
Best for:
- Hands-on fun
- Photography moments
- Adding charm to parties
Why people love them:
They’re interactive, safe when handled properly, and perfect for special photo opportunities.
Choosing the Right Fireworks for Your Event
Before you rush to buy fireworks online, it’s important to match the type of firework to the event you’re hosting. For instance:
- Weddings: Roman candles, sparklers, and low-noise fountains create a romantic atmosphere.
- Public Shows: A mix of rockets, cakes, and large barrages for variety and excitement.
- Family Gatherings: Fountains, sparklers, and small cakes are fun and safe for all ages.
When shopping online, check product descriptions for height, noise level, and duration to ensure they meet your needs.
Safety First – Always
Fireworks are exciting, but they need to be handled with care:
- Read instructions before lighting any firework.
- Keep a safe distance—both for you and your audience.
- Never relight a dud; wait at least 15–20 minutes before handling it.
- Use on a stable surface to avoid tipping over.
- Supervise children at all times, especially with sparklers.
